How I fell in love with Amala while in Nigeria – Didier Drogba

Ivorian football legend Didier Drogba has praised Nigeria for its beauty, culture, and hospitality following his recent visit to the country, revealing that he fell in love with the local delicacy, Amala and Ewedu.

Speaking to journalists after his trip, the former Chelsea star said the reality of Nigeria is far more positive than the picture often painted on social media.

“If you only go by what’s said online, you’d think Nigeria is the worst country on earth,” Drogba said. “But Nigeria is beautiful especially Lagos. I ate Amala and Ewedu, and oh my God, it was delicious. I truly enjoyed myself.”

Drogba explained that his visit was part of a wider humanitarian mission across West Africa, with plans to extend his outreach to more Nigerian communities.

However, he disclosed that a planned visit to Anambra State was canceled due to security concerns, as his team was advised it might not be safe.

“We wanted to visit Anambra to help address clean water challenges, but were told it could be risky, so we had to cancel,” he said.

His comments have drawn mixed reactions online, with some commending his honesty and others urging him to be more diplomatic about the country’s security situation.

Despite this, Drogba, who serves as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador and runs the Didier Drogba Foundation, said he remains eager to collaborate with Nigerians on projects that empower youth and strengthen communities.

“Nigerians are passionate, talented, and full of life. From the music to the fashion and football, the country has incredible energy and potential,” he added.
