The Nigerian House of Representatives has called on federal government agencies to implement stringent measures aimed at combating homicide and femicide across the country. This resolution followed the adoption of a motion during Tuesday’s plenary session, presented by Rivers State lawmaker Awaji-Inombek Abiante, alongside three other colleagues.
Abiante also emphasized that the right to life is a fundamental human right, enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution. He expressed concern over the alarming increase in homicide cases, including murder, manslaughter, and other violent crimes that result in the loss of life. This surge in violence, he noted, has sparked widespread public demand for justice and stronger action to protect citizens.
Abiante also drew attention to femicide, the intentional killing of women and girls due to their gender, which has emerged as a critical issue in Nigeria. In recent years, there has been a disturbing rise in such cases, highlighting the vulnerability of women and girls to gender-based violence.
