HoR To Hold Public Hearing On Tax Reform Bills

6 days ago 19

ABUJA – The leadership of the House of Representatives has announced that the Committee on Finance will lead a public hearing on tax reform bills on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.

This comes after the House, on February 12, debated the general principles of the bills, marking the resolution of a months-long stand-off between lawmakers and the executive branch.

The consolidated bills, which were prepared in anticipation of the debate and second reading, aim to streamline tax administration, protect small-scale businesses, and strengthen the revenue generation capacity of sub-national governments.

At the plenary session, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas highlighted that the upcoming public hearing is aimed at gathering valuable input from stakeholders, especially in light of the controversy surrounding the proposed tax reforms following the transmission of the bills to the National Assembly in September 2024.

In this regard, the Speaker announced the formation of a 36-member Special Committee tasked with overseeing the session. This committee will bring together experts in tax administration to explore and discuss the potential benefits of the proposed tax reforms.

“The House of Representatives will hold a public hearing on the tax bills on Wednesday, September 26, 2025, at the National Assembly Complex,” the Speaker confirmed.

“I am pleased to announce the formation of a Special Committee tasked with overseeing the upcoming public hearing. The Chairman of this Special Committee is Hon. Abiodun Faleke, the Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, while Hon. Seidu Abdullahi, the Deputy Chairman of the Finance Committee, will serve as the Deputy Chairman.

The committee will also include several distinguished members, such as Hon. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, the leader of the Northern Caucus; Hon. Nicholas Mutu, the leader of the Southern Caucus; Hon. Sada Soli, the Chairman of the North West Caucus; Hon. Idu Igariwey, the Chairman of the South East Caucus; and Hon. Fred Agbedi, the Chairman of the South-South Caucus, among others.

With this important development, the bill is expected to return to both chambers for its third and final reading in the coming weeks, after which it will be forwarded to the President for assent.”
