5 days ago 26

A professor at the Federal University of Agriculture (FUNAAB), has died from a hit and run accident along the Prof. Wole Soyinka road within Kemta – Somorin road, in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital.

The deceased, Prof. Oladipo Ademuyiwa, was of the department of Biochemistry at the University before his untimely death.

Reacting to the incident, the Community Development Association (CDA) Chairman, Dr. Ayo Ajasa, lamented the incessant accidents along the corridor, which according to him has further exposed the dire need for immediate government intervention.

He added that the death of Prof. Ademuyiwa was avoidable if government had listened to its repeated appeals on installation of speed breakers, and other road signs along the route.

“It is disheartening that despite repeated appeals to the Ogun State Government and relevant agencies, no concrete action has been taken to install speed breakers and other necessary safety measures on this road.

“The government did not hesitate in installing speed bumps on the Ilugun end of the road, but ignored our persistent requests to safeguard lives in Ajebo Road Housing Estate”, he said.

He therefore, called on the government to as a matter of urgency, Install speed breakers and lorry barriers along the road without further delay as well as make clear traffic signages available to caution motorists against reckless driving.

While enforcing stricter laws to curb excessive speeding within the estate, Dr Ajasa said it was unfortunate that a community of law-abiding citizens must suffer repeated accidents, near-fatal encounters, and now the loss of an esteemed professor, simply due to government inaction.

Prof. Ademuyiwa was hit by a reckless driver on Sunday, February 16, 2025, just as another accident occurred within 24 hours of this tragic incident, proving that this road remains a death trap.

“However, we hold the government accountable and call on the Governor of Ogun State to intervene immediately before more lives are lost.

“We also appeal to the media, civil society organizations, and well-meaning Nigerians to amplify this call for justice and safer roads in our community”, he added
