Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, has announced a landmark multi-year partnership between the Federal Ministry of Health, its agencies, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to entrench accountability and transparency in the ongoing nationwide upgrade of Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs).
Speaking in Abuja, Prof. Pate disclosed that the ICPC will now conduct real-time tracking and monitoring of all renovation and construction projects executed under the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) before any completion certificate or payment is approved.
“This is a deliberate institutional safeguard to ensure every kobo allocated for revitalising our primary healthcare system is properly accounted for and delivers tangible value to Nigerians,” the Minister stated.
He revealed that hundreds of specially trained Performance and Financial Management Officers have already been deployed to all 774 local government areas.
These officers are working side-by-side with the 774 National Health Fellows recently commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to provide additional layers of oversight at the grassroots.
According to Prof. Pate, the partnership with the ICPC and the expanded field monitoring teams mark a decisive shift toward zero tolerance for corruption and waste in the health sector.
“This administration is committed to integrity, transparency, and maximum impact. Nigerians deserve to see their money work in renovated clinics, equipped wards, and functional primary healthcare centres, not in private pockets,” he emphasised.
The multi-year collaboration is part of the Tinubu administration’s broader Sector-Wide Approach to reposition Nigeria’s health system and achieve universal health coverage.
