“He Did All He Could to Stay in Power” – Bugaje Challenges Obasanjo’s Third-Term Denial

Political activist and former National Assembly member Dr. Usman Bugaje has fiercely challenged former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s recent claim that he never pursued a third term, asserting that Obasanjo “did everything within his power” to extend his presidency.

Speaking at a Goodluck Jonathan Foundation event in Ghana last week, Obasanjo dismissed the third-term controversy, saying, “I’m not a fool. If I wanted a third term, I know how to go about it. Nobody can say I called them to discuss a third term.”

On Arise Television’s Morning Show on September 22, Bugaje, who served in the National Assembly during Obasanjo’s tenure, refuted this.

“Obasanjo did everything he could to get a third term and failed,” he stated, emphasizing that lawmakers at the time had direct knowledge of these efforts.

Bugaje alleged widespread intimidation, noting, “Many of us were threatened by his agents. He worked day and night.”

He cited Senator Victor Lar, then Northern caucus leader in the House, who reportedly went into hiding to resist the third-term push.

“There’s undeniable evidence,” Bugaje added. “Those who distributed money, those who received it, and those who refused are still alive. Obasanjo cannot deny this.”
