Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta have set the tone for Sunday’s Premier League blockbuster between Manchester City and Arsenal at the Emirates, with both managers talking tough as they prepare their squads for battle.
Arsenal head into the clash sitting third on the table with nine points from four matches, knowing a win could lift them into second place behind leaders Liverpool. Arteta, however, faces a tense wait on the fitness of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Ben White, who are all doubtful for the match.
Arteta admitted it was a difficult situation but insisted his side would be ready. “We are assessing them closely. It’s never ideal to go into such a big game without clarity on who is available, but we will make the right calls to give ourselves the best chance,” he said.
For Guardiola, the trip to North London is a chance to revive City’s campaign after a mixed start. The champions sit 12th with six points, but a victory would pull them into the top four. The Spaniard will be without Mateo Kovacic, Rayan Cherki and Omar Marmoush, though John Stones could return after rejoining training this week.
Guardiola made it clear his side would not shy away from the challenge. “We know Arsenal at the Emirates is one of the toughest games you can have. They play with intensity and quality, and Mikel has done an incredible job. But we also trust our way. We go there to compete and to win,” he declared.
Arteta, once Guardiola’s assistant at City, has built a team that mirrors his mentor’s philosophy but carries its own edge.
With Liverpool out in front, both managers know Sunday’s result could prove pivotal in the title race. Arteta will be counting on home advantage to keep Arsenal’s momentum alive, while Guardiola will be looking to silence the Emirates crowd and kick-start City’s push up the table.
Kick-off is set for 4:30 p.m. Nigerian time.
