Government Should Support Media With Tax Incentives, Relief On Import Duties, Soneye Says

Former Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), Mr Femi Soneye, has urged the Federal Government to support the Nigerian media with tax incentives, duty waivers, and a dedicated fund to strengthen sustainability and independence in the industry.

Soneye made the call in Abuja on Tuesday after receiving the NUJ FCT Excellence in Corporate Communications Award, conferred on him by the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council.

In his remarks, he stressed that while the Nigerian press remains robust, its capacity is being undermined by systemic obstacles.

“The Nigerian media remains one of the most vibrant in Africa, but it also faces systemic challenges, financial, political, legal, and technological that weaken its effectiveness. The government can play a supportive role by granting tax incentives or relief on import duties for newsprint, broadcast equipment, and digital infrastructure,” Soneye said.

He further urged the government to consider the creation of an independent fund to bolster journalism.

He said: “The Federal Government should establish an independent media development fund to support investigative journalism, community radio, and newsroom innovation. This model has worked in South Africa, the United States, and Canada, and it can provide a much-needed buffer for Nigerian journalism.”

The NUJ leadership, led by Chairperson Grace Ike, with the Deputy Chair, Secretary-General, and other executives in attendance, described Soneye as a consummate professional who has distinguished himself with tact and excellence in the communications field.

The award, according to the NUJ, reflects Soneye’s long-standing contributions to journalism and corporate communications, as well as his consistent advocacy for a stronger, independent, and sustainable Nigerian media.
