Gov Ododo Orders Political Appointees to Villages to Boost Voter Registration Drive

In a strategic push to enhance voter participation ahead of upcoming elections, Kogi State Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo has directed all political appointees to immediately return to their respective villages and local communities to mobilize citizens for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

The directive, announced on Saturday, aims to expand the state’s voter base and ensure broader access to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s registration centers across the 21 local government areas.Governor Ododo, who issued the order during a meeting with his cabinet and key stakeholders at the Government House in Lokoja, emphasized the importance of grassroots engagement in strengthening democracy.

“As leaders, it is our duty to take the CVR exercise to the doorsteps of our people. I am directing all political appointees, including special advisers, commissioners, and other aides, to proceed to their villages without delay.

They must educate, encourage, and assist eligible citizens in registering to vote,” Ododo stated. He highlighted that the move is part of the administration’s commitment to transparent and inclusive electoral processes, particularly targeting youth and women in rural areas who may face logistical challenges in accessing urban registration points.

The CVR exercise, which commenced nationwide on August 1, 2025, and is scheduled to run until September 30, 2025, allows eligible Nigerians aged 18 and above to obtain or update their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs).

In Kogi State, INEC has deployed over 200 registration machines and mobilized ad-hoc staff to designated centers, including local government secretariats, wards, and mobile units in hard-to-reach areas.

However, initial reports indicated low turnout in some rural communities, prompting the governor’s intervention.

Sources close to the government revealed that appointees have been given a one-week deadline to report back on their mobilization efforts, with performance metrics tied to increased registration numbers in their localities.

The directive also includes provisions for transportation allowances and security escorts to facilitate safe travel and operations. Ododo warned against any form of coercion, stressing that the exercise must remain voluntary and free from inducements.

INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kogi State, Mr. Gabriel Ada, welcomed the governor’s initiative, noting that it aligns with the commission’s goal of registering at least 500,000 new voters in the state.

“This partnership with the state government will go a long way in overcoming barriers like distance and awareness. We urge all eligible citizens to seize this opportunity,” Ada said in a statement.
