Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering support for local government autonomy in Gombe state, emphasising its critical role in fostering grassroots development, financial independence, and effective governance.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Gombe state local government summit, the governor welcomed dignitaries and stakeholders to the landmark event aimed at redefining local governance in the state.
Governor Yahaya underscored the importance of local government autonomy, noting that as the closest tier of government to the people, local councils must be empowered with financial independence, administrative efficiency, and accountability to effectively serve their communities.
He highlighted the Supreme Court’s recent rulings and ongoing constitutional amendments as pivotal moments that demand proactive measures from local government leaders.
“Our administration is fully committed to local government autonomy. However, autonomy without capacity, financial discipline, and accountability will not yield meaningful progress. We must ensure that our local governments can efficiently manage their resources to deliver real impact,” the governor stated.
Governor Yahaya recalled the state of local governance upon assuming office in 2019, describing it as “administratively comatose and financially prostrate.”
He noted that his administration inherited a backlog of ₦21 billion in gratuity payments, among other debts, but through prudent fiscal management, the state has cleared over ₦17.2 billion, making all 11 local government areas (LGAs) financially solvent.
To institutionalize state-local government collaboration, Governor Yahaya announced the establishment of the Joint Projects Development Agency (JPDA), which ensures equitable resource distribution and joint execution of critical projects between the state and local councils.
“This agency embodies the principles of equity, fairness, and justice in grassroots development. Through it, we are ensuring that projects are not only executed efficiently but also address the unique needs of each LGA,” he stated.
Governor Yahaya praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to local government autonomy and fiscal federalism, while urging local government executives to embrace transparency, accountability, and proactive leadership.
As part of the summit’s resolutions, all participants will sign a declaration pledging to uphold good governance and service delivery, marking a significant step toward ensuring that the gains of the summit translate into tangible actions at the grassroots level.
“Local governments are the foundation of our democracy. Their success is our success. Together, we will build a Gombe where every LGA thrives and no community is left behind.
“The Gombe state local government summit 2025 sets the stage for a new era of grassroots governance, aligning with national reforms to empower LGAs with the autonomy and resources needed to drive sustainable development.
“With strategic planning, fiscal responsibility, and stakeholder commitment, Gombe state is poised to lead by example in redefining local governance for the benefit of all citizens”.
