Golden Eaglets To Face Ghana In WAFU-B U-17 Semifinal

The Golden Eaglets have set up a semifinal clash with Ghana after holding Burkina Faso to a goalless draw in their final Group B game of the WAFU-B U-17 Tournament on Saturday in Yamoussoukro.

Nigeria’s U-17 side, guided by coach Manu Garba, finished top of their group on goal difference.

Naija News reports that the competition also serves as the qualification route for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Golden Eaglets had announced their intent with a 4-1 win over the Benin Republic in their opening game.

Against Burkina Faso, they controlled possession early on and looked the more purposeful team. Goalkeeper Great Edafe produced the standout moment of the first half when he reacted smartly in the 20th minute to keep out a stinging effort.

Burkina Faso’s defence held firm under constant pressure, closing down spaces and frustrating Nigeria’s forwards. After the restart, the game sparked to life. The Burkinabe almost scored an own goal in the 55th minute when a desperate clearance struck the woodwork.

Nigeria’s best chance to win it came in the 80th minute. Substitute Emeka Nnalue beat two defenders with quick footwork before driving a low shot just wide of the post. The miss summed up the evening as the Eaglets pushed but could not find the cutting edge.

The draw, however, was enough to secure top spot and set up a fierce semifinal against Ghana. For many fans, the fixture is more than just a game.

Nigeria and Ghana share one of African football’s most storied rivalries, and the young Eaglets will be eager to prove themselves against the Black Starlets.
