The Ghanaian government has warned MultiChoice, the operator of DSTV, of a potential shutdown of its services in the country due to its failure to reduce subscription prices, which the government deems disrespectful to Ghanaian citizens.
On Friday, September 5, 2025, Samuel Nartey George, Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, issued the ultimatum via a statement on his official X account.
In response, MultiChoice released a statement on the same day, clarifying its position on pricing.
“We continue to engage with the Minister to find an amicable solution that benefits all parties without jeopardising the viability of DSTV services,” the statement read.
“We will fully participate in the established Working Committee. However, MultiChoice Group has not agreed to a price reduction.”
Reacting to MultiChoice’s statement, Minister George expressed frustration, stating, “I have no intention of tolerating DSTV’s disrespect to Ghanaians.
If MultiChoice is no longer willing to discuss price reductions, as they previously indicated, we will proceed with the shutdown tomorrow as planned.”
He noted that DSTV had initially shown readiness to address the Ministry’s pricing concerns and requested a delay in enforcement actions, but their latest stance suggested a reversal.
George emphasized that no company is above Ghanaian law, inviting MultiChoice to negotiate price reductions when ready.
“Until then, there is no basis for further discussions,” he said, warning that the National Communications Authority (NCA) would enforce regulatory measures if necessary.
The minister reaffirmed Ghana’s openness to businesses that respect its laws and institutions.
