Elon Musk may face repercussions for his involvement in Germany’s election campaign, according to Friedrich Merz, the leading candidate to become the country’s next chancellor.
In an interview with “The Wall Street Journal” published on Thursday, Merz, the conservative opposition leader, stated that Musk’s actions “cannot go unchallenged.”
“What happened in this election campaign cannot go unchallenged,” Merz asserted. “It can be a political response. It can be a legal response. I want to analyse this calmly after this election campaign.”
Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur, has been vocal in his criticism of incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz while openly expressing support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. His remarks and apparent endorsement of AfD come in the lead-up to the country’s elections on February 23.
The extent of any potential legal or political measures against Musk remains unclear, but Merz’s statement signals that Germany’s political establishment may take action in response to perceived foreign interference.
