German Journalists’ Union Slams ABC Over Kimmel Suspension, Warns Of Press Freedom Erosion In US

Germany’s main journalists’ union has called on major US media outlets to stand firmly behind their journalists after ABC, owned by Walt Disney, suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live in response to remarks made by the host about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

In a statement on Thursday, Mika Beuster, head of the German Journalists’ Association (DJV), criticised ABC’s decision, describing it as part of a troubling trend. “We are observing a rampant erosion of freedom of the press and freedom of expression in the US,” he said.

Beuster added that media companies had a duty to defend their journalists instead of bowing to political pressure. “Their servility towards President Trump will not bring them peace, but will result in further pressure,” he warned.

The suspension came after the head of the US communications regulator threatened Disney, intensifying concerns about political interference in the media. Kimmel’s case is the latest in a series of punitive actions against American media figures, teachers, academics, and employees who commented on Kirk’s assassination.

Republican leaders and conservative commentators have urged Americans to “mourn respectfully” or face consequences, with some individuals already dismissed or suspended for remarks shared online.

The DJV’s intervention reflects growing international alarm over what it views as shrinking space for free expression in the US, once considered a global standard-bearer for press freedom.
