French tactician, Patrick Vieira, has been dismissed as Genoa’s head coach following a poor start to the Serie A season, with the team yet to record a single league victory after nine matches.
The club confirmed the decision in a brief statement on Saturday, thanking the Frenchman and his coaching staff for their professionalism.
“Genoa CFC announces that Patrick Vieira is no longer the head coach of the First Team,” the statement read. “The company wishes to thank the technician and his staff for the seriousness and professionalism demonstrated during their work and extends best wishes for the continuation of their professional careers.”
Vieira’s exit was described as mutual, with sources close to the 49-year-old telling BBC Sport that both sides agreed to part ways after discussions on Friday night.
Genoa have endured a miserable run in the league this season, losing six and drawing three of their nine games to sit bottom of the table. Their only two wins came in the Coppa Italia, further showcasing the struggles that have haunted the team in Serie A.
The club has placed Roberto Murgita in temporary charge, assisted by former captain Domenico Criscito, as they begin their search for a permanent replacement.
Patrick Vieira was appointed in November 2024 and initially brought stability to the club, guiding Genoa from 17th to 13th place last season after collecting eight wins and nine draws from 26 matches. However, that momentum quickly disappeared as results turned sour this campaign.
Vieira enjoyed a decorated playing career with Arsenal, Inter Milan, and Manchester City before moving into management. The World Cup and European Championship winner with France previously managed New York City FC, Nice, and Crystal Palace, as well as RC Strasbourg before joining Genoa.
