Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, has assured residents that the government is working round the clock to manage flooding across the state, while reaffirming its commitment to inclusivity and non-discrimination.
Speaking during an interview with ARISE NEWS on Sunday regarding ongoing efforts to tackle the persistent flooding challenge in the state especially during the rainy season, Omotosho said the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has rolled out multiple contracts to improve drainage and flood control infrastructure.
“The flood management, we have so many contracts that are going on now. People are working as I speak with you. Lagos State is working 24 hours,” he said.
He noted that flooding is a global challenge and not unique to Lagos, citing recent examples of severe floods in cities such as New York where cars were displaced and subways inundated.
“I told somebody the other time that in New York City, people have forgotten that cars were being moved, subways are being flooded. It’s a natural phenomenon, uniquely everywhere. Last year, the floods in New York were so bad,” Omotosho explained, adding that the government will continue to implement measures to keep the state safe and secure for all residents.
Addressing concerns about ethnic targeting in the state, the commissioner dismissed any suggestion of bias under the Sanwo-Olu administration. “Lagos State government under Mr Sanwo-Olu is never going to target anybody on the basis of ethnicity. He has run this state now for about six years without anybody being targeted because of your colour, because of your language, because of your religion. It’s not so and it’s never going to be so at all,” he said.
Omotosho urged Lagosians to remain calm and united, stressing that everyone belongs to the city regardless of background. “We are all Lagosians and we are proud to be Lagosians,” he affirmed, while encouraging residents to cooperate with ongoing flood control projects to ensure a safer environment.
