Yobe State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said its operatives have arrested 222 trailers carrying 3,169 passengers to avert unprecedented crashes and fatalities on the highways.

The Sector’s Commander, Dawi Dantaro, made the disclosure while briefing newsmen in Damaturu on the Corps’ level of preparedness to ensure an accident-free Eid el-Kabir celebration across the state.

He said the unacceptable behavior of motorists led to the flag-off of the Inter-Agency Joint Task Force (IJTF) to enforce compliance with the use of trailers to convey passengers as well as mitigate road traffic crashes.

Dantaro said the IJTF, which commenced work on March 23, has successfully arrested a total of 222 trailers loaded with 3,169 passengers hanging on top of goods and animals.

“The IJTF recently successfully arrested a total of 222 trailers loaded with 3,169 passengers hanging on top of goods and animals.

“The IJTF dropped over 2,440 passengers who were mandated to take alternative vehicles designed for conveying passengers.

“Since the commencement of the IJTF on March 23, 2024, the menace of road traffic crashes involving trailers and the fatalities that come with them have been adequately tamed and the situation arrested on all fronts,” he said.

Dantaro urged stakeholders and drivers in the state to provide them with the necessary support to enable them to reduce the high level of road accidents to the barest minimum.

In a bid to achieve and ensure a hitch-free 2024 Eid-el-Kabir Sallah celebration, he said the corps have deployed 743 patrol vehicles, 184 administrative vehicles, 92 ambulances, 23 tow trucks, and 144 motorbikes across the country.
