FRSC Alerts Motorists Over Gully Erosion On Onitsha-Owerri Road In Anambra

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a warning to motorists travelling along the Onitsha-Owerri Road, advising them to exercise caution due to a massive gully erosion that has washed away an entire lane at the Ozubulu section of the Ekwusigo Local Government Area in Anambra State.

Reports indicate that the erosion began months ago near the Sea Horse area of the highway but has worsened significantly following heavy rainfall recorded on Tuesday. The downpour caused the total collapse of one lane, creating a major safety risk for road users on the busy route.

According to PUNCH, a video that has gone viral on social media captures the scene of the erosion site, showing how the gully has completely overtaken the road. In the footage, a voice can be heard urging drivers to be extremely careful, especially while navigating the area during nighttime.

Responding to the incident, the Sector Public Education Officer of the FRSC in Anambra State, Margaret Onabe, confirmed the situation in a press release issued on Saturday. She appealed to motorists to adhere to traffic safety measures and drive carefully around the affected section to avoid road crashes.

Onabe noted that the FRSC’s swift intervention was aimed at protecting lives and ensuring the smooth movement of vehicles along the route. She added that the road safety alert became imperative after receiving distress reports about the deteriorating condition of the Ozubulu portion of the road.

“The Federal Road Safety Corps RS5.36 Oraifite Unit Command has responded promptly to a distress call concerning the worsening state of the erosion site in Ozubulu,” part of the statement read.

“Following directives from the Sector Commander, the Unit Commander and her team immediately mobilised to alert motorists and relevant stakeholders. As of the time of this report, the FRSC team, in partnership with Tamaic Construction Company Ozubulu, the Chairman of Ekwusigo LGA, and his team, are on-site to ensure safety and the smooth flow of traffic.”

She further disclosed that the construction company has been assisting in repositioning barricades to prevent accidents, while the Federal Comptroller of Works, Dr. Emeka Okpara, alongside his field team, has carried out an on-the-spot assessment of the affected road.

Onabe stated that the FRSC, working with other key stakeholders, will continue to monitor the site and implement measures to protect motorists. “The state Sector Commander, Bridget Asekhaauno, reiterated the Corps’ commitment to ensuring the safety of road users and preventing crashes. We appreciate the quick response of Tamaic Construction Company, the Ekwusigo Mayor, and the Federal Comptroller of Works to this urgent situation,” the statement added.

The FRSC also appealed to drivers to strictly follow all safety instructions, cooperate with road officers, and adhere to the traffic guidelines in place. “The motoring public is urged to take note of ongoing road works, cooperate with safety officials, and drive with caution, particularly around the erosion site. Compliance with these safety measures is vital for everyone’s wellbeing,” Onabe advised.

Meanwhile, Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to combat erosion and flooding challenges affecting various parts of the state.

Speaking on October 9, 2025, Governor Soludo pledged that his government would strengthen intervention efforts, especially in flood-prone areas like Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area, where residents face persistent environmental hazards.

He assured that erosion control and environmental management remain key priorities for his administration, emphasizing that long-term projects are underway to protect lives, property, and the state’s infrastructure.
