The founder of YARGOTE FOUNDATION, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) for children, youth and women development has emphasized the need for parents to bond with their children especially the boy child.
She said this would create a conducive atmosphere for the proper development of the male child.
Speaking with journalists during a family fun fair at Kabusa community, Federal Capital Territory on Thursday, the founder said the initiative was to bring children and parents together in a relaxed atmosphere to bond.
Blueprint reports that the programme featured games between parents and children, music, dance and other activities.
“Our project, empower the boy child project is being on since May and part of what we teach the boys aside skills, the mentoring sessions and community engagement; we have come up with family fun fair which is an avenue for our parents and the boys to bond.
“”We are bringing them together in a relaxed atmosphere to know themselves better. The kind of games we are playing today is help parents and children understand one another,” she said.
According to her, if parents become more approachiable, when children are going through anything they would be able to speak up.
“The bonding create an atmosphere that when something is going wrong with the child, the parent would be able to detect quickly. “
Speaking further on the motivation behind the programme, she said, “During our regular classes, there were questions we asked the children and they don’t know the answers. For me they were basic questions that they supposed to know and they are questions that when you asked they are like it is a taboo. It is like they have cross the red line at home.
“So we decided to bring them here to break the barrier to let the parents know that they should always be available.
“It will help the society because parents will be more aware of what they children are up to and children will become more knowledgeable about their parents.”
Speaking, a parent, Chiroma Sunday Kpowu, lauded the initiative, saying “it has helped him as his children to connect.”
“The programme is lively, it helps in keeping the family together,” he added
He commended the foundation for great work it doing with the male children in the community.
On his part, Kefas Shupel Auta, said he now relates with his parents better.
The program is really entertaining, it teaches us how to relate with our parents, how to know more about our parents and how our parents will also know more about us.
“I am the type that is not too free with my parents but today I am more free with my parents because of the games,” he said.
