The Affiong Etuk Foundation for Inclusive Health, a non-governmental organization in Akwa Ibom State has called for increased care and support for people living with dementia.
The appeal was made during the foundation’s 10th anniversary celebration held at the Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio Secretariat, Uyo at the weekend.
Speaking at the event, the founder, Prof. Uduak Archibong, pledged the foundation’s commitment to transforming dementia care in Nigeria.
She highlighted the foundation’s focus on providing evidence-based support to people with dementia, assisting their families and caregivers, and promoting inclusive healthcare practices.
Prof Archibong maintained that the foundation prioritizes improving the quality of life for those affected by dementia and fostering a culture of inclusion and diversity.
The immediate past Commissioner for Information and commissioner nominee in Akwa Ibom State, Ini Ememobong, who chaired the occasion commended the foundation’s efforts and called for collaboration with the state government.
He stressed the importance of synergy to align with the government’s initiatives, particularly as the present administration is working on establishing a care home.
In a lecture titled “Managing Dementia,” an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Consultant Neurologist at the University of Uyo, Dr. Bertha Ekeh, stated that while there is no known cure for dementia, individuals living with the condition require proper care and understanding.
She advised that dementia could be prevented through regular physical exercise, maintaining heart health, a balanced diet, engaging in social activities, and keeping the brain active by learning new skills.
