Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, popularly known as OBA, and the former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2024 Ondo State election, has passed away at the age of 60.
Akingboye, a respected businessman and philanthropist, reportedly died on Wednesday morning at his residence in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lagos.
Until his death, he was the Chief Executive Officer of Benshore Maritime and Clog Oil Systems, as well as the President of WeAfrica Group. He also held the traditional title of Olowomeye I of Ikaleland.

Confirming the development, his aide, Mr. Oyeniyi Iwakun, described the late politician as “a beacon of hope to countless people whose passing is a devastating loss to both the business and political communities in Nigeria.”
The Social Democratic Party (SDP), Ondo State chapter, also expressed deep sorrow over Akingboye’s death. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party described him as “a remarkable leader, philanthropist, and business tycoon who dedicated his life to serving the people of Ondo State.”
“It is with profound sadness that the Social Democratic Party, Ondo State chapter announce the passing of Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, our beloved governorship candidate for the 2024 Ondo State election. Akingboye, popularly known as OBA, was a remarkable leader, philanthropist, and business tycoon who dedicated his life to serving the people of Ondo State,” the statement read.
The party further highlighted Akingboye’s campaign vision, which centered on good governance, social justice, and sustainable development, noting that his leadership and passion inspired many people in the state.
“During his campaign, Akingboye shared his vision for a brighter future for Ondo State, focusing on good governance, social justice, and sustainable development. His leadership and passion inspired many, and his legacy will continue to shape the future of our state,” the SDP stated.
The party described his passing as a huge loss not only to his family and associates but also to the entire SDP family across Ondo State. It offered condolences to his loved ones while praying for the repose of his soul.
“We pray for the repose of his soul and offer condolences to his family, friends, and supporters. May his memory inspire us to continue striving for a better Ondo State,” the party added.
