Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate in the November 16, 2024, Ondo State gubernatorial election, has died.
The prominent businessman and traditional leader passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, September 3, at his residence in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lagos, according to a statement from his spokesperson, Oyeniyi Iwakun.
Akingboye, who contested against incumbent Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and 12 other candidates in the 2024 election, was a respected figure known for his contributions to business and community development.
His spokesperson’s statement, issued in Akure, described him as a man of “unwavering integrity, an accomplished businessman, philanthropist, visionary leader, and community builder who lived a fulfilled and purposeful life.”
The statement read: “With deep sorrow and a heavy heart, we announce the passing of our father, brother, mentor, and leader, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye (OBA), the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Governorship Candidate in the 2024 Gubernatorial Elections. Otunba Akingboye passed away earlier today at his residence in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lagos.”
Until his death, Akingboye served as the Chief Executive Officer of Benshore Maritime and Clog Oil Systems and was the President of WeAfrica Group. He also held the traditional title of Olowomeye I of Ikaleland, reflecting his deep ties to his community.
Akingboye is survived by his wives, children, grandchildren, and siblings. The family has indicated that burial arrangements and further details will be communicated in due course.
The news of his passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes across Ondo State and beyond, with many reflecting on his legacy as a dedicated leader and philanthropist.
His contributions to both the political and economic landscape of Nigeria will be remembered as the nation mourns his loss.
