Nigeria’s former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor (rtd), will on October 3, 2025, unveil his new book, Scars: Nigeria’s Journey and the Boko Haram Conundrum, a work already described by reviewers as “destined to change the Boko Haram narrative.”
The unveiling ceremony will hold at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been invited as Special Guest of Honour, while former President Olusegun Obasanjo will chair the occasion. The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah, is billed to review the book.
Since Boko Haram’s emergence in 2002, Nigeria and its neighbours have endured years of bloodshed, destruction of property, and economic disruption, with consequences rippling across the West African sub-region and beyond.
In Scars: Nigeria’s Journey and the Boko Haram Conundrum, Irabor offers a candid, insider’s perspective on the insurgency. Drawing from his years at the helm of military operations against the group, he dissects the roots of the conflict and the complexities that have sustained it, while also proposing solutions to one of Nigeria’s most enduring security challenges.
The 330-page book, structured into 14 chapters across three parts, traces Nigeria’s historical and political foundations, examines the conundrum posed by Boko Haram, and outlines the paradigm shift required to build lasting peace in the country despite persistent threats.
According to the book’s organising committee, the work represents not just a documentation of Nigeria’s struggles against insurgency, but also a call to action for policymakers, citizens, and the international community.
