Jonathan made the remark on Wednesday, during a requiem mass in honour of former Minister of Agriculture and one-time National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Audu Ogbeh, held in Abuja.

The ex-president described Ogbeh as a man whose life was marked by humility and forgiveness, noting that such values reflected his own approach to leadership and personal relationships.

“Chief Ogbeh was a man who did not seek revenge. He believed the past should be left behind and that we must keep moving forward. In that sense, he was just like me.

“If you hurt me today, I will forgive you. I don’t carry grudges against anybody.

“I believe the past is past, and I move on,” Jonathan said.

He explained that forgiveness was essential for political stability, national cohesion, and sustainable development, urging Nigerians to embrace reconciliation as a tool for healing the nation.

Jonathan further noted: “As leaders and citizens, we must understand that bitterness cannot build a nation.

“Only love, tolerance, and forgiveness can lead us to progress.”

He also added: “Nigeria is bigger than any individual ambition. If we put the interest of the country above personal grievances, we will achieve the unity and development we all desire.”
