Flying Eagles captain Daniel Bameyi sets sight on Super Eagles debut

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles captain, Daniel Bameyi, has expressed strong optimism about making his senior national team debut in 2026, as he targets a major breakthrough in his football career.

Bameyi, who captained Nigeria at the last FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile where the team exited in the second round, said the coming year would be pivotal for his development at both club and national team levels.

Speaking in an interview with Punch, the versatile defender reaffirmed his commitment to continuous improvement as he pushes for a place in the Super Eagles.

“My main goal for the coming year is growth in every area of my career. I want to keep developing, learning, and working hard so that I can reach a higher level,” he said.

“At club level, I hope to play an even more important role in the team and contribute consistently throughout the season.”

Bameyi also revealed his ambition to represent Nigeria at the highest level, stating that he remains determined to seize any opportunity that comes his way.

“With the national team, my aim is to continue representing Nigeria with pride and determination whenever I am called upon. I also want to earn more opportunities, help the team achieve strong performances, and contribute to taking Nigerian football to greater heights,” he added.

The 20-year-old has earned praise for his leadership qualities and versatility, with the ability to operate both in defence and midfield — attributes many believe could accelerate his rise to the senior national team.

Bameyi featured at the 2023 U20 AFCON in Egypt before leading the Flying Eagles to a strong campaign at the World Cup.
