Floods Ravage Adamawa, Thousands Forced To Evacuate

Barely two months after a devastating flood hit Adamawa State, another heavy downpour has caused significant destruction, leaving dozens of families homeless.

The rain, forecasted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency last Friday, began around 4 a.m. on Tuesday, and lasted until noon, flooding homes, businesses, and worship centres across the state capital.

In Damilu, along the airport road, residents struggled to save their loved ones and salvage property destroyed during the six-hour deluge.

Other affected areas include Jambutu, Bachure, Runde, and Shinko in Yola-North Local Government Area, where thousands were forced to seek refuge along roadside areas.

Speaking to news men on Tuesday, the Executive Secretary of Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), Dr. Celine Laori, described the situation as “devastating, with thousands of families rendered homeless.”

She added, “Our teams are working round the clock to evacuate residents and provide temporary shelter and relief materials.”

The Adamawa State Police Command also mobilized marine units for emergency assistance.

Spokesperson SP Suleiman Nguroje said, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Dankombo Morris, has personally visited flood-affected areas to assess the situation.

“We are committed to protecting lives and property during and after the flood.”

He urged residents to “remain calm, avoid flooded zones, and follow instructions from security personnel.”

Residents expressed distress over the recurring floods. One resident in Bachure told PUNCH, “Everything we worked for is underwater again. We hope the government will assist us immediately.”

Dr. Laori assured that “rescue operations and relief distribution are ongoing, and additional support is being coordinated with local authorities and volunteers.”

Authorities continue to urge vigilance, caution, and cooperation as efforts to mitigate the impact of the flood intensify.
