First Lady of Nigeria Oluremi Tinubu has described the late Afenifere chieftain, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, as a distinguished political leader whose legacy transcended political affiliations.
She stated this during a condolence visit to the family at his Lekki residence in Lagos, according to a statement issued by her Media Aide, Bisola Kukoyi.
Mrs Tinubu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have met the elder statesman shortly before his passing on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96.
She prayed for the repose of his soul and divine strength for his widow, Christiana Adebanjo, and the entire family.
“Despite our political affiliations, Chief Adebanjo was family,” the First Lady remarked, highlighting her respect for his contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape.
Femi Adebanjo, son of the late leader, expressed appreciation for the First Lady’s visit, describing it as a comforting gesture during their time of grief.
The First Lady also held a private meeting with Mrs Adebanjo during her visit.
Adebanjo was a prominent elder statesman and a staunch advocate for democracy and justice throughout his life. His passing marks the end of an era for one of Nigeria’s most respected political figures.
