First Lady Leads Cancer Awareness Walk In Gusau


The wife of Zamfara State Governor, Hajiya Huriyya Lawal, has reiterated her commitment to promoting public awareness, early detection, and support for victims and survivors of cancer across the state.

She made the pledge on Saturday while leading a cancer awareness walk through major streets of Gusau, the state capital, to sensitize residents about the importance of early screening and preventive measures.

The First Lady, accompanied by the wife of the Deputy Governor, civil society groups, medical professionals, youth organizations, and women associations, led the “Walk Away Cancer” campaign which began at the Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital. The walk passed through Sani Abacha Way, Central, and Bello Barau Street before terminating at the Government House, Gusau.

Addressing participants at the end of the exercise, Hajiya Huriyya Lawal emphasized the need for continuous enlightenment on cancer prevention. She said early detection remains key to reducing deaths caused by the disease, particularly among women.

She said the campaign was aimed at encouraging residents to adopt regular health checks and healthy lifestyles to minimize the risk of cancer.

Medical professionals who took part in the walk also called for sustained public sensitization, stressing that early diagnosis and prompt medical attention could save many lives.

They noted that cancer remains one of the leading causes of death globally, especially among women, and urged continuous education and awareness at both urban and rural levels.
