Fire Destroys Six Rooms In Oyo


A fire broke out on Tuesday, consuming six rooms in the Akinsoji zone of Ogbere Moradeyo, Oremeji community, in Egbeda Local Government Area, Oyo State.

Eyewitnesses informed The PUNCH that the blaze erupted at about 5:30 a.m., allegedly after one of the building’s residents carelessly dropped a cigarette stub.

An eyewitness, Tunji Bamgbade, told PUNCH that while no lives were lost, the fire severely damaged six rooms in the residential building.

He said, “Six rooms were affected before the arrival of firefighters, while properties worth millions of naira were also destroyed.”

Maroof Akinwande, Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, confirmed the incident in Ibadan, the state capital, saying the fire was reported at approximately 5:55 a.m. on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, after a caller identified as Mr. Kayode alerted authorities about a house on fire at the location.

He said, “Immediately the address was taken, firemen led by CFS Adesina Olusoji promptly deployed to the place. On getting there, it was a private residential building of six rooms engulfed by fire, and our officers swung into action and restricted the fire from spreading to other nearby buildings.

“The fire was jointly extinguished with Federal Fire Service, Ibadan Command and a lecture on fire prevention was delivered by the officer in charge.

“No casualty was recorded, and the cause of the fire was traced to the indiscriminate dropping of a cigarette stub by one of the occupants, which ignited nearby combustibles and set the building on fire.”

Akinwande, who also serves as the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reform, urged the public to remain vigilant about fire hazards, particularly during the ember months.
