FIFA Penalizes South Africa With Three-Point Deduction Over Ineligible Player In World Cup Qualifier

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has sanctioned South Africa’s national football team, Bafana Bafana, for fielding an ineligible player during a 2026 World Cup qualifying match.

The decision followed the participation of midfielder Teboho Mokoena in the game against Lesotho, despite him being suspended for accumulating two yellow cards in previous qualifiers.

On Monday, FIFA’s official statement read: “Following a review of the March 2025 World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Lesotho, it has been confirmed that Teboho Mokoena was ineligible to play.

“Consequently, South Africa is docked three points, and Lesotho is awarded a 3-0 victory. The South African Football Association is fined 10,000 Swiss Francs.”

The ruling has significant implications for Group C standings, where South Africa had previously led the table.

With the three-point deduction, the team now shares the top spot with Benin, both having 14 points, while Nigeria and Rwanda follow closely with 11 points each.

The South African Football Association expressed disappointment over the decision but affirmed its commitment to compliance.

“We respect FIFA’s ruling and will ensure full adherence to disciplinary regulations moving forward,” said SAFA spokesperson Thabo Mokoena.
