FIFA appoints Weah, Drogba to new anti-racism panel

World football governing body FIFA has named African football icons George Weah and Didier Drogba among a 16-member panel of former players tasked with tackling racism in the game.

The initiative, first announced at FIFA’s annual congress in Thailand in May 2024, brings together ex-players, both men and women, from 14 countries to form a global “players’ voice” panel.

Weah, the former AC Milan striker and ex-president of Liberia, has been appointed honorary captain of the group, while former Chelsea and Ivory Coast star Drogba will also play a leading role in shaping anti-racism strategies.

The panel will advise FIFA on reforms, take part in educational programmes, and push for stronger enforcement against discrimination in football.

“Football brings unity and development. It also enhances humanity,” said Weah. “I will always exert all efforts to promote the sport because football is life. I am honoured to serve in this role.”

FIFA president Gianni Infantino welcomed the appointments, insisting the panel will drive lasting change.

“They will support education at all levels of the game and promote new ideas for lasting impact,” Infantino said. “Racism and discrimination are not simply wrong; they are crimes. All incidents, whether in stadiums or online, must be fully punished both by football and across society.”

The move marks FIFA’s latest effort to intensify its fight against racism, with the new panel expected to help shape policies that protect players and fans worldwide.
