FG urges calm over Trump’s comments on Nigeria’s security situation

The Federal Government has urged Nigerians to remain calm following recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the security situation in the country.

Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, made the call on Monday during a courtesy visit to Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State in Dutse.

This was contained in a statement issued by Rabiu Ibrahim, the minister’s Special Assistant on Media.

“President Bola Tinubu has the capacity to protect Nigeria from destabilising forces and to address any strains in our international relations. Nigerians are therefore urged to remain calm,” Idris said.

Idris visited Jigawa State to participate in the North-West 2025 Youth Parley and to present the achievements of President Tinubu’s administration after two years in office.

Last month, Trump, in a post on his Truth Social platform, described Christianity in Nigeria as facing an “existential threat” from radical Islamist groups. He claimed that thousands of Christians were being killed and accused radical Islamists of responsibility, designating Nigeria as a “country of particular concern.”

He also stated that the United States “cannot stand by while such atrocities occur,” saying his administration was prepared to defend Christian communities worldwide. Trump called on Congress to investigate the matter, instructing Congressman Riley Moore, Chairman Tom Cole, and the House Appropriations Committee to report their findings.

On November 1, Trump said he had directed the Pentagon to prepare “options for possible military measures” against terrorist groups in Nigeria, saying the aim was to protect Christian populations.

The Nigerian government rejected these claims. President Tinubu reaffirmed that Nigeria guarantees religious freedom and protects the rights of all citizens, regardless of faith.

The U.S. threat of military action has drawn international attention, with countries including China and Russia expressing support for President Tinubu and calling on Washington to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty.
