In a groundbreaking move, the federal government has injected N5 billion worth of farm equipment and inputs into Jigawa state, revolutionising the agricultural landscape and empowering 160,000 farmers.
Senator Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, spearheaded the initiative, which aims to catapult Jigawa to the forefront of agricultural productivity. The state, already renowned for its wheat farming and environmental conservation efforts, is poised to reap the benefits of this massive investment.
Governor Umar Namadi’s administration has been at the vanguard of agricultural innovation, with an ambitious plan to plant one million date trees for environmental sustainability. The National Agricultural Growth Scheme – Agro Pocket (NAGS-AP) programme has played a pivotal role in supporting agricultural expansion, with the state initially securing 30,000 hectares of land for agricultural purposes.
The government has now expanded wheat cultivation to 80,000 hectares, engaging 160,000 farmers in the 2024/2025 dry season farming. To further enhance farm productivity and mechanization, 10,000 water pumps, knapsack sprayers, herbicides, pesticides, and organic fertilizers have been distributed to farmers.
This initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of modernising agriculture, ensuring food security, and boosting economic prosperity through mechanisation and sustainable farming practices.
As the government continues to drive agricultural growth, retailers and traders have been urged to reflect the recent drop in food prices in their sales, making essential commodities more affordable for Nigerians.
The distribution ceremony, held at the Green Field Day celebration in Dabi Village, Ringim local government area, Jigawa state, marked a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to revitalise the agriculture sector. With this N5 billion injection, Jigawa’s farmers are poised to reap a bumper harvest, driving economic growth and food security nationwide.
