The Federal Government will replace chalkboards with smart boards in all Nigerian schools by 2027. Education Minister, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, revealed this during a ministerial roundtable in Abuja, highlighting the administration’s commitment to bridging the digital divide in education.
From 2026, the annual school census will be fully digitalised. Over 60,000 tablets have already been distributed to students in Adamawa, Oyo, and Katsina under the Airtech (AWS) and BESDA programmes, with 30,000 more expected soon. Alausa noted that smart boards will enable interactive, technology-driven lessons, allowing students to engage actively with multimedia and digital content.
He expressed concern over high dropout rates, revealing that out of 30 million pupils captured from 21 states on the Nigeria Education Management Information System (NEMIS), only six million reach senior secondary school. Digitised data will allow evidence-based interventions and better tracking of students, including biometrics for each child.
Alausa also announced plans to integrate WAEC and JAMB data into NEMIS and appreciated UNICEF and President Bola Tinubu for supporting the initiative. UBEC Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, confirmed that technology is now fully incorporated into teaching and school operations as part of the digitalisation of public education.
This initiative aims to create a more dynamic learning environment, reduce out-of-school rates, and ensure every child, regardless of background, has access to quality education.
