FG Mentions 14 States Where Flood May Attack in September, Full List Emerges


  • The Federal Government has issued a flood alert to 14 states in Nigeria, after projecting the possibility of heavy rains in some local governments

The Federal Government, through the National Flood Early Warning Centre of the Federal Ministry of Environment, has warned 14 states in the country to prepare for heavy rains that may cause flooding between Thursday and Monday, September 4 and 8.

Usman Abdullahi Bokani, the director of the Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management Department in the ministry, raised the flood alert in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, September 4. The director then called on relevant stakeholders to be on alert.

Daily Trust reported that on the same day, seven communities in the Lau local government area of Taraba were flooded following a heavy downpour on the same day.

States to experience flooding in September

The 14 states projected to be affected and their areas are listed below:

NiMet issues thunderstorm warning

This came barely one week after the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued a one-day weather alert and listed the states where thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected to occur in Nigeria.

In its outlook released on Friday, August 29, NiMet predicted thunderstorms with light showers in some northern states, in Kebbi, Zamfara, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Sokoto, Taraba, and Jigawa states, on Saturday morning, August 30.

Also, the FG’s agency predicted that on Saturday afternoon, thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated in parts of Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, and Borno states.

In North-Central states, NiMet predicted that on Saturday morning, light rains are expected in parts of Niger, FCT, Nasarawa, and Plateau states.

While on Saturday morning, moderate rains are anticipated in parts of Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara, Niger, Plateau, Kogi, and the FCT.

NiMet releases weather forecast, advises Nigerians

Legit.ng earlier reported that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released a fresh weather forecast, predicting sunshine and haziness across the country from Saturday, January 18, to Monday, January 20, 2025.

NiMet released the new weather forecast on Friday, January 17. The outlook envisages sunny skies on Sunday in a hazy atmosphere over the northern regions over the next three days.
