FG Launches Niger Delta Ferry Project to Drive Trade, Inclusion

The Federal Government has inaugurated the Project Steering Committee for the Niger Delta Ferry Service Project, a flagship initiative to establish a modern marine transport network connecting riverine communities and spurring economic growth across the region.

Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, joined the ceremony on Tuesday, where Honourable Minister of Niger Delta Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, was named chairman of the committee.

The project seeks to enhance mobility, reduce trade costs, and unlock opportunities in the Niger Delta by linking isolated communities through efficient ferry services.

“Efficient transport catalyses economic activity. When people and goods move more easily, markets expand, productivity rises, and communities prosper,” Mr. Edun stated, emphasizing the initiative’s role in supporting private-sector growth and social inclusion.

Part of the Renewed Hope infrastructure agenda, the project prioritizes connectivity, investment, and sustainable development, with coordinated efforts from key ministries to ensure successful implementation.

By improving waterway access, the ferry network will empower SMEs, traders, and workers, while reducing isolation, boosting commerce, tourism, and job creation.
