ABUJA – The Federal Government of Nigeria has pledged to restore 100 million hectares of land by 2030 through large-scale tree planting and other environmental initiatives to combat desertification and promote sustainability in the region.

The Great Green Wall project is a flagship program of the African Union that seeks to transform the lives of millions of people in the Sahel by creating a mosaic of green and productive landscapes.

The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, stated this during the ministerial segment of the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall (PAGGW), where leaders and stakeholders from across the continent gathered to discuss strategies for sustainable land management in the Sahel region.

In his address, Minister Lawal emphasized Nigeria’s active participation in the Great Green Wall initiative, which seeks to restore degraded land and strengthen resilience against climate change.

A statement on Monday said that he highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts among African nations to address the challenges posed by climate change and land degradation.

Lawal also called for increased funding and support from international partners to ensure the success of the initiative.

As the ministerial segment concluded, participants reaffirmed their dedication to advancing the goals of the PAGGW, fostering regional cooperation, and securing a sustainable future for millions in the Sahel.
