FG commits N90bn to assist 400,000 students – Minister

Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, has disclosed that the federal government has allocated N90 billion to support the education and welfare of over 400,000 students in tertiary institutions across Nigeria through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

Idris made the disclosure during a courtesy visit by State Commissioners of Information, led by Usman Tar of Borno State, in Abuja.

He explained that the initiative, introduced by President Bola Tinubu, is aimed at ensuring that financial challenges do not prevent students from accessing higher education.

According to him, President Tinubu approved N90 billion for NELFUND, which covers both tuition and living expenses for the beneficiaries.

Idris said the programme reflects the government’s objective to expand access to education.

He stated that the President’s goal is for every eligible student to attend school, regardless of background or affiliation, and emphasized the administration’s commitment to serving all Nigerians.

He also urged critics to consider the impact of the initiative rather than focus on political differences, noting that even those who may disagree with the government can benefit from such programmes.

He added that the government has also provided access to cancer treatment through newly established centres.

Since its launch on May 24, 2024, NELFUND has received over 550,000 applications.

The loan scheme is part of the Access to Higher Education Act, which offers interest-free loans to support tuition and living expenses for students from low-income families attending public tertiary institutions.
