The Federal Government of Nigeria has welcomed the verdict of the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland, which sentenced Simon Ekpa to six years in prison for terrorism-related offences.
Ekpa, a self-declared pro-Biafra activist, has been linked to inciting violence and unrest in southeastern Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, by Idris Mohammed, the Minister of Information and National Orientation described the ruling as a notable development in the global effort to address terrorism and political violence.
“This verdict brings justice to many Nigerians affected by the violent acts encouraged and supported by Ekpa and his associates. It also strengthens the relationship between Nigeria and Finland,” Idris stated.
“For years, Ekpa’s inflammatory messages and support for violent activities have led to loss of lives, displacement, destruction of property, and fear in several communities. These actions directly threatened Nigeria’s peace and stability.”

The Minister noted that the decision by the Finnish judiciary affirms Nigeria’s position and sends a clear message that individuals who promote violence will face consequences, regardless of where they operate.
He reiterated the Tinubu administration’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and the safety of its citizens. “We will continue to use all available means—diplomatic, legal, and security-related—to maintain peace and national unity,” he added.
The Federal Government also urged those influenced by Ekpa’s actions to reject violence and pursue peaceful engagement. “Nigeria belongs to all its people. Lasting progress can only be achieved through unity and dialogue,” Idris said.
The government expressed appreciation to the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Armed Forces, security and intelligence agencies, the Ministry of Justice, and the Nigeria Police for their continued service.
“Their work, along with the resilience of Nigerians, remains essential to the country’s stability,” the statement concluded.
As this case marks a significant step forward, the government called on all Nigerians, both at home and abroad, to support efforts towards unity, peace, and national development.
