The Federal Government has begun disbursing a N32,000 pension increment to approximately 832,000 retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS), with the enhanced payments set to reflect in the September 2025 payroll cycle.
The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD), the agency overseeing the transition to a contributory pension system, confirmed the rollout in an official statement shared on its X handle on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
According to PTAD, the new pension structure includes the fixed N32,000 increase alongside percentage adjustments of 10.66% and 12.95% tailored to different categories of pensioners, such as those from civil service, police, parastatals, and privatized entities.
This initiative follows President Bola Tinubu’s approval in August 2025 of an emergency budgetary allocation of ₦820.188 billion from the ₦845 billion fund released by the Ministry of Finance, aimed at addressing long-standing welfare concerns for DBS retirees.
PTAD Executive Secretary, Tolulope Odunaiya, described the development as a “milestone” that reaffirms the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda commitment to pensioners’ entitlements.
“This partial release enables us to implement these critical adjustments promptly, enhancing the financial security of our retirees,” the statement read, while expressing gratitude to the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service, the House Committee on Pensions, and pensioner unions like the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and the Federal Parastatals and Private Sector Pensioners Association of Nigeria (FEPPPAN) for their collaborative efforts.
The move comes after months of advocacy and phased arrears payments earlier in 2025, including ₦5.12 billion disbursed in August to 90,689 retirees and ₦8.6 billion in June to over 148,000, addressing backdated portions of the increment from July 2024.
PTAD assured stakeholders that it is working with relevant authorities to secure the remaining funds for full sustainability, urging pensioners to verify their details via the agency’s portal to avoid delays.
