The Federal Government has officially approved the appointment of Professor Lucian Obinna Chukwu as the substantive Vice Chancellor of Admiralty University, Ibuzor, Delta State.
In a statement from the Federal Ministry of Education, it was revealed that the appointment is for a single tenure of five years, effective from February 28, 2025.
Prior to this appointment, Professor Chukwu served as the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Management Services at the University of Lagos.
However, the selection process for the Vice Chancellor of Admiralty University was reportedly marred by controversies, with some stakeholders alleging an attempt to sidestep merit in the selection process.
According to Folasade Boriowo, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry Prof. Chukwu received 83.41 percent of the total votes cast among the five candidates interviewed.
She stated, “The Governing Council of Admiralty University, Ibuzor, conducted the selection exercise for the appointment of a substantive Vice Chancellor on February 26 and 27, 2025, in the Council Chamber of the University.
“At the end of the exercise, Prof. Lucian O. Chukwu emerged as the highest scorer with 83.41 percent among the five interviewed candidates.”
“In line with the principle of merit upheld by the federal government, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, has approved the appointment of Professor Lucian O. Chukwu as the substantive Vice Chancellor of Admiralty University, Ibuzor.
“The appointment is effective from February 28, 2025, for a single tenure of five years. The Honourable Minister wishes the new Vice Chancellor a successful tenure.”
Meet Prof. L.O.C
Professor Obinna Lucian Chukwu was trained at the University of Lagos, where he obtained his Doctorate in Ecosystem Health and Pollution Management.
He later received post-doctoral training in Integrated Coastal Management at the Coastal Resources Institute, University of Rhode Island, USA.
With over twenty years of teaching experience, Prof. Chukwu has instructed both undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Lagos and has supervised and graduated numerous PhD and M.Sc. candidates.
His research has led to the publication of several peer-reviewed papers in recognized journals focusing on ecosystem health and pollution management.
Prof. Chukwu has served as a consultant to numerous national and international agencies, including the Federal Ministry of Environment, contributing to various Environmental Impact Assessment Studies (EIA).
He has also led several EIA Studies in compliance with World Bank Guidelines and IFC Performance Standards across sectors such as Aviation, Infrastructure, Ports and Harbors, and Oil and Gas.
His professional background includes membership in several significant groups, such as the Environmental Impact Study Group for the Nationally Coordinated Research Programme (NCRP) funded by the World Bank, and serving on the Expert Group Review Panel for the GEF International Waters Project within the NEPAD Environmental Action Plan, in collaboration with UNIDO in Vienna, Austria.
He has also acted as the IMO International Regional Expert in Coastal and Marine Environment for West Africa, supporting the Glo-Ballast Partnership Programmes under the Guinea Current Large Marine Ecosystem (GCLME), as well as UNIDO International Regional Expert on Integrated Coastal Management for NEPAD Environmental Action Plan initiatives.
Prof. Chukwu has participated in and contributed as a resource person in various national and international conferences, workshops, and training programs across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. He is a member of several professional associations, including the Science Association of Nigeria (SAN), Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN), Nigerian Association for Aquatic Sciences (NAAS), and the International Water Association (IWA) based in the UK.
Professor Chukwu is happily married and has children.
