Femi Falana Vows Legal Action Against Oil Firms Over Niger Delta Environmental Pollution

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has vowed to sue oil companies over environmental damage in the Niger Delta.

He said the move became necessary following years of pollution and neglect suffered by host communities due to the reckless operations of multinational oil companies.

Falana made the vow on Friday, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, during the Ken Saro-Wiwa 30th Memorial Lecture, organised by a coalition of environmental civil society leaders.

He condemned the exploitation and abandonment of oil-producing communities by multinational oil companies, describing their actions as “a grave injustice to the people who sustain the nation’s economy.”

According to him, “Communities producing the oil that sustains Nigeria’s economy deserve to live comfortably with access to basic amenities, not in poverty and neglect.”

The human rights lawyer further declared that his team of lawyers “will not rest until justice is served to the long-suffering people of the Niger Delta.”

Falana also urged the Federal Government to compel oil companies to clean up polluted areas and compensate affected communities.

He said, “The time has come for the government to make these companies accountable. They must restore the environment and rebuild what they have destroyed.”

Other speakers at the memorial, including environmentalist Nnimmo Bassey, echoed Falana’s concerns, calling on government agencies to ensure a full cleanup of Ogoniland before any talks of oil resumption.

The event, held in honour of late activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, also saw civil society groups renew their call for environmental justice, describing Saro-Wiwa’s legacy as “a rallying point for truth, justice, and restoration in the Niger Delta.”
