FEDPOLYOKO students protest against ongoing strike

By Bartholomew Madukwe

Students of Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra, have called on the institution’s Management and Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, to come to agreement and end its ongoing strike, which started earlier in January.

The Student Union Government president, Comrade Akuche Izuchukwu, who spoke during a peaceful protest on Monday, lamented that students of the polytechnic have been involved in several crimes as a result of the strike.

He said: “We have lost some to road accidents and others are so devastated that they don’t even know their fate as Okopoly students any longer. Well, It will interest the students, populace and entire polytechnic community to know that the union has risen beyond all measure to make sure that this strike which has lingered for over a month and few weeks now comes to a peaceful end today. I do not sleep again as result of this strike. Enough is enough!

“The School Management and ASUP authorities Oko chapter must agree to disagree to end this strike today. The students’ union government over the time has engaged both parties in a dialogue for them to come into terms and end the strike but it all proved abortive. So we the SUG has decided to engage in this peaceful protest to send signal to appropriate authorities within and outside the school to hear our voice and come to our rescue.

“Other schools, like University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, to mention but few, has matriculated their new students but here our newly admitted students are passing through hell to get through with their admission clearance process as result of this strike. I am disheartened and there is no joy in me again because our fathers don’t care about our welfare and wellbeing again as their students”.

Reacting to the SUG claims, the school management congratulated the union for their bold steps and for making the student’s interest their priority and vowed to do anything within their powers to come into terms with the ASUP body soon.

The students did the needful, Strike always have a negative result on the students while the lecturers will be the ones that enjoys it at long run because they still get paid during the strike. I suggest ASUP and ASUU should find another means to press home their demands and the government should always do the needful for crying out loud
