ABUJA – The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has officially launched electronic ticketing (e-ticketing) for traffic violations, marking a shift to a technology-driven enforcement system.
The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), also known as Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), announced the initiative on Monday, following a sensitization operation on the new enforcement strategy.
Speaking on the development on Monday in Abuja, DRTS Director, Dr. Abdullateef Bello, explained that the Service has acquired high-tech devices capable of detecting and recording traffic infractions. These devices will instantly issue e-tickets to offenders, significantly reducing physical confrontations between officers and motorists.
“In compliance with the FCT Transportation Secretariat’s strategy on e-enforcement, we have today, Monday, February 17, 2025, commenced e-ticketing and central booking of traffic offenders,” Bello stated.
Bello clarified that while the DRTS had challenged a court ruling barring it from stopping and impounding vehicles, the new system is legally backed under the FCT Transportation Secretariat’s existing laws.

“Moving forward, all traffic violators will be electronically booked and given a seven-day grace period to pay their fines. Failure to comply will result in vehicle impoundment,” he warned.
Offenders who fail to settle their fines within the stipulated period will have their vehicles impounded or be required to pay the penalty during their vehicle license renewal. However, a system for appealing penalties has also been put in place.
Bello reassured motorists that under the new framework, officers will no longer stop vehicles at random. Instead, the automated system will identify violators, ensuring fair and transparent enforcement.
“We are back on the road, but only those not in compliance with the law will be penalized,” he stated.

With this digital transformation, the FCTA aims to enhance road safety, reduce corruption, and streamline traffic management in the capital city.
