Farmers’ groups have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently address the escalating cost of fertiliser, warning that the price surge threatens food security and could jeopardize the administration’s agricultural reforms.
The Coalition of Farmers Association of Nigeria (COFAN) and Himma Youth Farmers Association of Nigeria (HYFAN) voiced concerns over the restructuring of the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative (PFI).
They highlighted that fertiliser prices have surged from N5,500 to as high as N60,000 per bag, rendering it unaffordable for many farmers.COFAN President Abubakar Bamai cautioned that without immediate action, crop yields could plummet, driving up food prices across Nigeria.
He urged the government to sustain imports of raw materials for fertiliser production until local manufacturing can meet demand.
The groups also advised that the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) oversee import operations to ensure transparency and stabilize prices.
While praising President Tinubu’s agricultural reform efforts, the associations called for a balanced approach that prioritizes affordable access to fertiliser and other essential inputs for farmers.
