Fake Cowbell Sachet Milk Now In Circulation In Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians to the circulation of counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachet milk in the country.

In a statement published on its website on August 10, 2025, the agency disclosed that Promasidor Nigeria Limited, the Marketing Authorization Holder and manufacturer of Cowbell “Our Milk,” had notified it of fake products imitating the brand. The counterfeit versions were said to be carrying unauthorized use of the brand name, packaging design, NAFDAC registration number, and trademark.

Promasidor confirmed that the fake products were not manufactured or distributed by the company, noting that “the counterfeit packaging design was last used for production by the company in September 2023.”

NAFDAC highlighted clear differences between the genuine and fake 12g sachets. The original contains creamy milk, while the counterfeit version “does not seem like milk.” The genuine sachet uses the revised PNG artwork with the slogan “Our Creamy Goodness”, whereas the counterfeit relies on the old PNG “Our Milk” design.

Further discrepancies include batch details printed with ink instead of laser technology, coding done outside the designated area, and manually executed sealing and cutting on the sachet’s vertical sides instead of automated processes.

The counterfeit product details are:
• Product Name: Cowbell Our Milk 12g
• Purported Manufacturer: Promasidor Nigeria Ltd.
• Production Date: April 2025
• Expiry Date: December 2028

The agency stressed the health risks involved, warning: “The use or consumption of counterfeit Cowbell ‘Our Milk’ Milk presents serious health and safety risks. Such products may contain harmful substances, including toxic chemicals, unapproved additives, or diluted ingredients that do not meet food safety standards. Consumption of counterfeit milk can result in foodborne illnesses, allergic reactions, organ damage, or even death in severe cases. Infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly are particularly vulnerable.”

NAFDAC confirmed that all zonal directors and state coordinators have been instructed to conduct surveillance and mop up the counterfeit Cowbell sachets across the country.

Distributors, retailers, and consumers were also advised to remain cautious. “All food products must be obtained from authorized/licensed manufacturers/suppliers. The products’ authenticity and physical condition should be carefully checked,” the statement added.

The public has been urged to report suspected counterfeit products to the nearest NAFDAC office, call 0800-162-3322, or email [email protected]. Adverse reactions can also be reported via the E-reporting platforms on www.nafdac.gov.ng, the Med-safety app on Android and iOS, or through [email protected].
