David Moyes

Fabrizio Romano’s definitive update on David Moyes

On paper it would appear that West Ham have enjoyed another excellent season under David Moyes.

In the quarter-finals of the Europa League and potentially looking to become the first team this season to beat Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, the East Londoners are in seventh pace in the Premier League and on course for another finish in the European places.

West Ham’s football might not be pretty but it’s effective – and there’s the rub.

Moyes remains under pressure at West Ham

The Hammers have always been known for playing the ‘West Ham way.’ Indeed, it’s arguable that some fans might even prefer seeing their team lose 4-3 in an epic encounter than winning 1-0 over a boring 90 minutes.

As defeatist as that sounds, the London Stadium faithful are used to being entertained, and if there’s one thing that a David Moyes side generally lacks, it’s that ability to get fans up off their seats on a regular basis.

Given how much it costs to watch a football match these days it could also be argued that the Irons aren’t giving value for money, and that’s a real problem for Moyes.

West Ham United’s David Moyes isn’t universally admired by the club’s fans

The last thing he needs is the supporters continuing to turn against him despite this season’s relative success.

“Rumours appear to be continuing on David Moyes but at this stage I’m not aware of decisions made about him by West Ham,” Fabrizio Romano said to CaughtOffside for his exclusive Daily Briefing.

“The club are fully focused on the Premier League and European football, so everything that comes next will be discussed later.

“I think many times we heard that Moyes was almost gone and he’s still there.

“Nothing is decided yet.”

With seven games to go in the 2023/24 campaign West Ham have a handful of clubs breathing down their necks, and Fulham who are way down in 13th are just six points behind them.

Realistically, the only team Moyes might be expected to reel in during the final stretch of the campaign is Man United who are currently one place and three points above them.

London rivals Tottenham are in fifth but are already 12 points ahead and playing much more consistently.
