A former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State, Brig. Gen. John Sura (Rtd), has announced his resignation from the party.
Gen. Sura, who contested in the 2023 PDP governorship primary election that produced Governor Caleb Mutfwang as the flag bearer, disclosed his decision in a statement released on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
The announcement was posted on his official Facebook page and addressed to his supporters.

In the message, the retired military officer described his exit from the PDP as a moral obligation to his loyal supporters.
“It has become imperative that I address you directly as my compatriots because you have been there with me since the early days when I joined politics and ran for the 2023 gubernatorial elections till today,” he wrote.
He explained that although some of his close allies were already aware of his plans, he felt compelled to formally communicate the decision.
“You might have heard the news of my resignation from the PDP. I owe you a moral duty to address you directly.
“Although I have discussed this issue with some of you personally, I thought you were the first to know formally,” he added.
Gen. Sura promised to meet with his supporters, popularly known as the Sura Club and the Liberation Family, to further explain his reasons.
“I will arrange and fix a date to invite you as a political family to discuss further on the reasons that necessitated my resignation and a collective resolution be taken,” he said.
His resignation comes amid a wave of defections from the PDP in Plateau, including that of Chief Letep Dabang, former Director General of the Mutfwang/Piyo Campaign Organization, who recently joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
