Fresh reports have emerged stating that former Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, is alive, contrary to earlier claims of his death.
An online report had suggested that his family had allegedly confirmed his passing after a long battle with severe heart failure and complications linked to urinary cancer.
Conflicting Claims on Obiano’s Health
The earlier report alleged that his relatives said his health had declined for months before a sudden collapse.
It also quoted a senior family member saying, “His health had been declining in the past months, but the final collapse came suddenly. We are devastated.”
Aide Debunks Death Rumour
However, a fresh update from one of his aides has dismissed the rumour. His former Commissioner for Information, Mr. C. Don Adinuba insisted that the former governor is very much alive and healthy.
He added that Chief Willie Obiano is not in London, as claimed, but is based in the United States.
Willie Obiano, the former governor of Anambra State, has said he is alive and healthy, contrary to earlier reports (not by Vanguard) that he was dead.
Hours after the rumours, Obiano publsihed a statement on his Facebook page.
He said: “My beloved Ndi Anambra, friends, and well-wishers, I woke to hear of a rumour making the rounds about my wellbeing.
“Let me assure you personally: I am alive, hale, hearty, and in excellent health. By the special grace of God, I am doing very well.
“It is unfortunate that some individuals still find joy in spreading falsehood simply for reasons yet to be established. But we will continue to rise above such mischief.
“To everyone who reached out with calls, messages, and prayers, I sincerely appreciate your concern. Your love and goodwill mean more than words can express.
“Please disregard the rumour entirely. We remain focused, grateful, and guided by God’s grace. Daalu nu, and may God bless you all.”
Ongoing EFCC Case Before His Alleged Death
Before the reported alleged death, Obiano is due to face trial on 25 November at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
He is standing trial for an alleged N4 billion money laundering case filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The matter, which involved nine counts, was recently moved to Justice Mohammed Umar.
Obiano ruled Anambra State from March 2014 to March 2022.
Witness Testimony in Previous Court Session
The former governor is accused of mismanaging over N4 billion belonging to the state.
During a hearing on 7 October 2024, the EFCC presented two witnesses before Justice Ekwo.
One witness, Mr Ugochukwu Otubelu, a former commercial bank employee, explained how he handled the security vote account under Obiano’s administration.
Otubelu worked with the bank from November 2008 to March 2023, but he now runs a private business.
Details About Security Vote Account
According to Otubelu, the security vote account had two signatories, the former Principal Secretary, Willy Nwokoye, and the Accountant, Theophilus Nweze.
He said he related with both men daily or weekly while processing their transactions.
