Erik ten Hag slams Bayer Leverkusen after ‘surprise’ two-game dismissal

Erik ten Hag has described his sacking by Bayer Leverkusen as “a complete surprise” after just two league matches in charge, the shortest managerial reign in Bundesliga history.

The former Manchester United boss was appointed on July 1 following Xabi Alonso’s move to Real Madrid and signed a two-year deal.

But after only three games in charge; a German Cup win over SG Sonnenhof Grossaspach, a 2-1 defeat to Hoffenheim, and a 3-3 draw with Werder Bremen, his contract was terminated on September 1.

Ten Hag, who lifted both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup during his spell at Old Trafford, hit out at Leverkusen’s hierarchy in a strongly worded statement.

He insists he was denied the time to rebuild a squad weakened by summer departures.

“To part ways with a coach after just two league matches is unprecedented,” Ten Hag said. “A new coach deserves the time and trust to implement his vision. I regret that the management was not willing to grant me this opportunity.”

His exit marks the third managerial casualty involving a former United coach within a week, following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure from Besiktas and Jose Mourinho’s removal as Fenerbahce coach.

Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said the decision was unavoidable: “The past few weeks have shown that building a new and successful team with this set-up is not feasible.”

Meanwhile, the Bundesliga club have already begun their search for a replacement.
